AAP Sections are groups comprised of members who are interested in and/or trained in a pediatric subspecialty, a pediatric surgical specialty, or a multidisciplinary area. A Section is guided by an Executive Committee elected by members of the Section. Sections are active in presenting educational sessions at the National Conference & Exhibition (NCE) for their own members as well as for the general pediatrician.
The Section Forum (SF), through its 52 Sections, represents approximately 36,000 members of the Academy. The SF is comprised of the chairpersons from all Sections. The
Section Forum Management Committee (SFMC) oversees the activities of the AAP sections and acts in a consulting capacity to the Board of Directors.
Section members are also active in publishing newsletters and bibliographies, developing policy and programs, and presenting scientific abstracts. Section membership plays a vital and growing role in the Academy as they assist in educational programming, statement development, practice parameter development, and many other projects. Sections have embarked on strategic planning sessions to help plot their future activities as they continue to work with the Academy to ensure quality care and access to pediatric care for all American's children, adolescents, and young adults.
The membership in sections constitutes a valuable reservoir of subspecialty expertise to be drawn upon for guidance in the development of Academy policy statements and practice standards and for representing the AAP to other organizations.
