The Mission of the Section on Pediatric Trainees (formerly the Section on Medical Students, Residents and Fellowship Trainees) is to empower and enable pediatric trainees to serve as strong advocates for the health and well-being of all children, effective leaders in their chosen profession and communities, and to fulfill their career goals and aspirations. The SOPT will accomplish this mission through engagement of its membership in education and experiential skill building, and by fostering collaboration, coaching and mentorship amongst all levels of pediatric trainees, thereby strengthening the American Academy of Pediatrics.
SOPT was founded in 1989 and is the largest of approximately 50 sections in the AAP. The section was formed to provide a voice for physicians in training and to offer a forum for the discussion of common interests and problems. The section publishes News and Views twice a year, sends a monthly
"What's New" email blast, and provides access to district newsletters, all of which update pediatric trainee members on section activities and issues. The section currently has over 14,000 members.
The section provides educational programming at the AAP National Conference and Exhibition (NCE). The all-day programs consist of a keynote address, opening plenary session, district breakout sessions, elections, and the resolution process.
There are many ways to get involved in the section. The executive committee of the section consists of a Chair, Vice-Chair, Immediate Past Chair, and Secretary. There are also District Coordinators (DC) and Assistant District Coordinators (ADC) from each of the ten districts around the country. Additionally, there are over thirty liaisons to AAP committees, sections, and outside organizations. These liaisons report to the section either in person, at one of the two executive committee meetings per year, and/or in writing to be included in the agenda book or for inclusion in
News and Views. Each residency training program also has at least one program delegate to the section that acts as a direct link between residents within their program and the section executive committee and are the identifying resource within each program for information regarding the Academy.
The section serves in a consulting capacity to the AAP Board of Directors and makes recommendations regarding policy statements related to pediatric residency training and other matters relating to the education and well-being of pediatric trainees.
The section's executive committee participates in the Annual Leadership Forum which serves as an open forum for the exchange of ideas and for the debate and discussion of burning issues. It is an opportunity for the section to have input to the Executive Board of the AAP and participate in the resolution process.
Some of the main initiatives of the section include involving pediatric trainees in the current advocacy project and supporting pediatric trainees with grants for international electives, national conference travel, financial-need based scholarships, advocacy projects, and research projects conducted during residency.
SOPT has several subcommittees created to better serve members and focus on section goals. These include Child Health, Member Value, Learning & Growth, Internal Process, Medical Students, and Fellowship subcommittees that work toward achieving the section's strategic plan initiatives.
The section actively recruits medical students into pediatrics and supports residents and fellowship trainees by providing a multitude of resources and opportunities during early career training.
