To promote and lead efforts to help children throughout the world attain optimal physical, mental and social health and well-being. The Section will prepare and empower its members to make meaningful contributions to global child health through high quality education and training, effective partnerships and collaborations, and staunch advocacy for the world's children. 


We believe:

  • ​The rights and needs of children are universal; 
  • Global child health should be a global priority; 
  • Pediatricians play a unique and critical role in advocating for the world's children; 
  • ​Strong global partnerships can help improve the lives of children everywhere. 


  • The International Community Access to Child Health Grant Program provides financial & technical support to health care workers in developing countries to plan and implement community-based programs that improve child health. Over the past decade, ICATCH has mentored and supported 58 grant recipients in 34 different countries


  • ​SOICH hosts an annual educational H program during the AAP’s National Conference & Exhibition, including a scientific abstract and photography session 
  • SOICH offers several scholarships annually for residents and fellows engaging in global health electives in low- or low-middle income countries (International Elective Award) 
  • SOICH is collaborating with educators to provide a platform to deliver global health curriculum and educational resources to pediatric trainees and providers 
  • SOICH members are engaged in many global training initiatives to improve child health worldwide 


  • SOICH members work with the AAP to develop policies related to best practices in global health engagement  SOICH collaborates with the AAP Departments of Federal Affairs and International Child Health to promote annual global health advocacy training for pediatric trainees and providers 
  • SOICH engages members as technical experts providing input on AAP global health advocacy initiatives ​


  • SOICH collaborates closely with organizational partners to ensure that strategic priorities are addressed across the networks of global child health educators, advocates, researchers, and providers 
  • SOICH members, in collaboration with the larger AAP membership, engage in efforts with global partners, including the Global Development Alliance to support the Survive and Thrive initiative and partnership with the Center for Disease Control to promote global vaccine delivery 


  • SOICH has nearly 1,000 members from 44 countries, including pediatric trainees, general pediatric providers, and subspecialists. Its membership represents a unique depth and breadth of global child health interests, expertise and initiatives. Dues/year: Resident Member $10, Affiliate Members $20 – all other types $40 (in addition to national dues). Visit the SOICH website for more information on dues and membership types 


  • SOI​CH sponsors a newsletter and listserv to disseminate global health-related news and best practices 
  • SOICH’s leadership engages in ongoing communication with other AAP sections, councils, committees, chapters and national organizations to ensure that global child health efforts are synergized and not duplicated AAP
