Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine Membership Criteria

​Section Membership is open to the following Member types: 

Candidate Members, Corresponding Fellows, Fellows, Fellowship Trainees, Honorary Fellows, International Members, National Affiliates, Resident Members, Senior Members, Specialty Fellows ​

Dues/year: Fellowship Trainees, Residents, Honorary Fellows and International Members - $0*. All other accepted National member types - $30*, Section Affiliates - $60

* In addition to national dues 

Fellows, Corresponding Fellow, Honorary Fellows and Senior Members must be certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and/or the American Board of Anesthesiology, devote a minimum of 50% of their professional time to the perioperative management, critical care or pain management of infants, children and adolescents age 21 and under and are interested in contributing toward the mission of the section.

Candidate Members and Fellowship Trainees who are currently enrolled in an ACGME approved anesthesia residency, or who have completed an ACGME approved residency program AND completed or are currently enrolled in an advance training program leading to proficiency in pediatric anesthesia or pediatric critical care.

Resident Members currently enrolled in a pediatric, anesthesia, or combined pediatric/anesthesia residency training program who are considering an advanced training program leading to proficiency in pediatric anesthesia or pediatric critical care, and who are interested in contributing toward the mission of the section.

International Members must devote a minimum of 50% of their professional time to the perioperative management, critical care or pain management of infants, children and adolescents age 21 and under and be interested in contributing toward the mission of the section.

National Affiliates who devote a minimum of 50% of their professional time to perioperative management, critical care, or pain management of infants, children, and adolescents age 21 and under, and who are interested in contributing toward the mission of the section.

Specialty Fellows must be physicians who are certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada who have adequate training in the field in which they are specializing and devote either a minimum of 50% of their professional time to the perioperative or critical care of infants, children and adolescents age 21 and under or a minimum of 50% of their professional time to pediatric pain management and who are interested in contributing toward the mission of the section.

Applicants who meet the above requirements but devote less than 50% of their professional time to the anesthetic or pain management care of children may be recommended for membership if they are in one of the following categories:

  • In charge of the teaching of pediatric anesthetic care of children or pediatric pain management in a medical school, or

  • The Department of Anesthesia designate for the clinical care of pediatric anesthesia problems in a university hospital, children's hospital or a pediatric department approved for residency training in pediatrics and affiliated with a medical school.

  • The Department of Anesthesia designate for pediatric pain management in a university hospital, children's hospital or a pediatric department approved for residency training in pediatrics and affiliated with a medical school.

Specialty Fellow applicants must submit: 

Documentation of completion of a pediatric anesthesia fellowship or at least eight (8) months of pediatric anesthesia training within the anesthesia residency training or its equivalent; no more than two (2) months of this time may be spent in the area of critical care.

Section Affiliate Membership

Licensed physicians who are (a) not eligible for Fellowship/Specialty Fellowship; (b) have adequate training in the field in which they are specializing; (c) devote a minimum of 50% of their professional time to the perioperative, critical care or pain management of infants, children and adolescents age 21 and under; and (d) are interested in contributing toward the mission of the section.
