Genetics Membership Criteria

​Council on​ Genetics

​Council Membership is open to the following Member types: 

Candidate Members, Fellows, Fellowship Trainees, Honorary Fellows, Senior Members and Specialty Fellows

Dues/year: All accepted National member types - $25*, Council Affiliates - $60
*In addition to national dues​

Special Requirements: Must be actively involved in some aspect of the study of genetic disorders in infants, children, or adolescents and interested in contributing toward the objectives of the Council.​

Specialty Fellows

Must hold a MD or DO degree and be board certified in medical genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics. 

Applicants must submit:

  • A photocopy of your certificate(s) of board certification

  • Sponsor statements from two AAP Fellows or Specialty Fellows in Good Standing, one of whom must be a member of the Council on Genetics, who have knowledge of the applicant’s practice.

  • Documentation that 50% of his or her professional activity is in pediatric genetics as evidenced by:

    • ​The applicant’s bibliography for the preceding five years, with attention to the pediatric genetic research endeavors or

    • ​​The applicant’s case log or referral records for the preceding year.​

Fellowship Trainees

Must be currently enrolled in an accredited genetics fellowship program, have completed three years of pediatric residency training, and be eligible to take the American Board of Pediatrics certification exam in general pediatrics.​

Council Affiliate membership

1. Genetic counselor affiliate applicants must be part of a pediatric genetics team under the direct supervision of an ABMG certified clinical geneticist. Applicants must be demonstrably active in pediatric genetics with at least 50% of their time devoted to the care of infants, children and adolescents with genetic disorders or birth defects as evidenced by the sponsor statements. 

Applicants must submit:

  • A photocopy of the applicant’s board certificate by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or the American Board of Medical Genetics

  • A current curriculum vitae; and

  • Two letters of support from AAP Fellows, one of whom must be a member of the Council on Genetics.

2. Registered nurses and nurse practitioners affiliate applicants must be part of a pediatric genetics team under the direct supervision of an ABMG certified clinical geneticist. Applicants must be demonstrably active in pediatric genetics with at least 50% of their time devoted to the care of infants, children and adolescents with genetic disorders or birth defects as evidenced by the sponsor statements. 

Applicants must submit:

  • A current curriculum vitae.

  • Two letters of support from AAP Fellows, one of whom must be a member of the Council on Genetics.​
