Letter from the Chair
Welcome to the AAP Section on Epidemiology, Public Health, and Evidence (SOEPHE). SOEPHE is comprised of pediatric epidemiologists and other individuals interested in the disciplines of epidemiology, public health, and critical thinking. Our membership encompasses primary care and pediatric subspecialties, academic medicine, and private practice, and public health and various research fields.
Our mission is to 1) improve the health of children through mentoring and educating pediatricians on the use of epidemiologic principles in the evidence-based practice of pediatrics and public health, and 2) assist AAP leaders in producing evidence-based policies and clinical guidelines.
As a SOEPHE member, you will be invited to participate in review of AAP documents including clinical guidelines, statements, and policies. Our section members participate in these reviews to ensure adherence to an evidence based approach, with appropriate consideration of public health practice and principles. You will also hear about AAP elections and conferences, and you will receive our News Brief by email.
In the area of public health and population health, SOEPHE members advocate for the AAP and its members to recognize their roles in the broader population and environmental context that determines health of children. As a Section member, you are able to join the
Prevention and Public Health Special Interest Group (SIG), a group jointly supported by SOEPHE and the Council on Community Pediatrics (COCP). This group provides educational and networking opportunities for members.
We also want you to share with us any specific interests within epidemiology, public health, and evidence that you may have.
The executive committee meets twice a year, in the spring at Pediatric Academic Society Annual Meeting and in the fall at AAP NCE. We have an annual business meeting for the Section at NCE. If you have ideas to expand or improve upon our missions, please tell us. We hope you find membership in SOEPHE rewarding and we look forward to working with you.
