Nomination of Pediatrician Dr. Donald Berwick to Lead Centers for MEDICARE and MEDICAID Services

5/17/2010

"The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), which represents 60,000 pediatricians, pediatricmedical subspecialists, and surgical specialists, applauds the nomination of Dr. Donald Berwick, FAAP, clinical professor of pediatrics and health policy at Harvard Medical School, as the new Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

"Don Berwick founded the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in 1991 because he believes—as many pediatricians do—that everyone deserves access to not just health care, but to quality health care. Dr. Berwick is leading the charge on the health quality improvement movement, and countless patients have benefitted as a result of his work at IHI.

"Pediatric providers - both physicians and hospitals—are constantly collaborating to improve the quality of children's health care through research, education, policy analysis and advocacy. But we can't do it alone. We need a strong child advocate within federal leadership who has an ear to the ground and who understands how to help this important work move forward in a meaningful way.

"Don Berwick brings this leadership. The American Academy of Pediatrics congratulates Don Berwick on his nomination, and looks forward to an efficient approval process so that he can begin the important work of implementing quality, affordable health care for all children in this country."
