Facebook

With more than 1 billion monthly active users, Facebook is a key place for you to reach your target audiences. Facebook uses a frequently updated algorithm to determine which content appears in each user's News Feed. The algorithm takes into account several factors, including a person's connections and activity on Facebook, as well as post type (video, photo, status update) and the number of comments or likes a post receives.

  • Post consistently. The most important thing you can do as an administrator of a Facebook page is ensure that you continue to post engaging content that provides value to your followers. This not only will increase the likelihood that Facebook will deliver your posts to a larger number of your followers, but also foster an active community for your page. Use Facebook Insights data to schedule your posts during times when most of your followers are online. Aim to post once per day, two at the most.

  • Keep it brief. Although Facebook allows for more text per post, short posts do best. Try to keep your post below 100 characters, when possible; in all other instances, aim to avoid adding so much text that it requires users to click "read more" to see the entire message. Take advantage of your ability to alter a link's image, headline and description to ensure that you are conveying as much information as possible concisely.

  • Incorporate high-quality images and video. Combining compelling text with an engaging visual will help boost interest among your followers.

  • Use targeting. Facebook allows pages to target their posts to certain audiences based on age, gender, interests, language, location and other factors. Experiment with this feature to help put your post in front of those who want to see them most. Use Facebook Insights to see who is most engaged with your page.

  • Boost posts. Want to reach more people? Consider paying a fee to boost important posts. Boosting also allows you to select more detailed targeting options, so you can ensure that your message reaches the right users.

  • Avoid blatant promotion. Facebook will bury posts that sound too promotional, such as those that only encourage people to purchase a product, enter a sweepstakes with no context, or contain the same content as ads.
