Key Driver: Strengthen institutional and departmental leadership support for the program

Conveying the importance of advocacy training and its benefits for patients, trainees and the hospital will build capacity of the training program.

What support do I have for my w​ork?

Maintain regular communication with leadership. Do not be afraid to ask for time and resources (e.g. administrative support).

How do I convey the importa​nce of this work?

Position community pediatrics training as invaluable. It is a required component of the RRC guidelines, and can play a key role in the resident assessment towards Milestones.

Demonstrate outcomes, including scholarly products/presentations. Link you​r curriculum​ to Competencies and Milestones​ to demonstrate the value to the accreditation of the residency.

Align curriculum with the hospital's community health and advocacy efforts, including the role your program could play in the "Community Benefit" requirement for your institution.

Make leadership aware of the growing interest for this work among medical students and demonstrate the importance of your community health and advocacy training program for resident recruitment.

Develop and share opportunities for positive media stories (e.g. TV, radio, newspaper, social media) and enhanced community relationships that demonstrate your institution's/department's commitment to the community.

What opportunities d​​o I have to share my work with department leadership?

Increase visibility of community pediatric training to faculty and residents through venues like noon conference, Grand Rounds and morning report.

Forward information about your successes to leaders ​- it is ok to "toot your own horn" from time to time.
