​AAP State Pediatric Preparedness Learning Collaborative


The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), launched a State Pediatric Preparedness Learning Collaborative in 2019. The goal of this Learning Collaborative is to improve pediatric preparedness and response in disaster or public health emergencies by promoting communication among pediatrician and public health participants in the Learning Collaborative.

Virtual Meeting Series

The AAP conducted 4 virtual meetings for the Learning Collaborative participants and a final meeting to discuss lessons learned and the impact that COVID-19 had on these efforts. See details below:

Description: This virtual meeting provided an overview of the State Pediatric Preparedness Learning Collaborative goals and objectives. The activities of the CDC Children's Preparedness Unit (CPU) were highlighted. Information was presented on the recently established AAP Council on Children and Disasters. Presenters shared information to help participants from all states plan for hospital pediatric patient surge.

Description: This virtual meeting provided an overview of the CDC Emergency Preparedness and Response Team, which focuses on planning specific to pregnant women and their infants. The input on advances in state or regional partnerships to promote pediatric preparedness and related partnerships were highlighted. Information on challenges and solutions as well as educational areas that were needed in each state and potential State Action Plan steps to inform development of a planning tool were also reviewed.

Description: The AAP identified a few CDC Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) representatives who presented on what they currently are working on/their experiences related to pediatric preparedness. Strategies on how CDC PHEP and other public health representatives could collaborate with pediatricians on pediatric preparedness were highlighted.
