An ecobiodevelopmental approach to childhood adversity demands a public health approach to prevent, mitigate, and treat toxic stress. The following figure addresses the pros (in blue) and cons (in red) of universal (primary) preventions of toxic stress, targeted (secondary) interventions for those at risk for toxic stress, and indicated (tertiary) treatments for those who are symptomatic due to toxic stress.
