The Screening Process

The Screening Process

To be effective, screening requires more than administering a screening tool to families. Practices should implement a comprehensive process that consists of the following steps:

  1. Ongoing surveillance

  2. Screening using an appropriate tool at AAP-recommended visits

  3. Discussion of screening results, even if the screening does not indicate any concerns. Discussion should include acknowledgement of child/family strengths.

  4. Referral for additional evaluation, treatment, or other services needed by the family. The practice and family should partner in determining the best referral options.

  5. Follow-up action to ensure that a patient/family has completed any referrals and to provide any additional supports needed if the referral did not meet the family’s needs.
