New Zika Updates

In August 2018, the CDC released a new Vital Signs report that describes the health and follow-up care of babies born to mothers with laboratory evidence of confirmed or possible Zika virus infection during pregnancy in US territories and freely associated states. 



AAP Zika Response Activities
  • The AAP held the "Zika Virus, Still a Threat - Updates and Implementation" webinar as part of its AAP Webinar Series on Zika Virus Syndrome. An archived version of the webinar and PowerPoint slides​ are available.​

  • An AAP/CDC "Forum on the Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Management of Zika Virus Infection Among Infants" was held in August 2017. Interim clinical guidance​ has been developed. See changes to the updated interim clinical guidance here​.​

  • The AAP held the "Beyond​​ the Basics: The Impact of Zik​​a Virus on Vision and Hearing" webinar as part of its AAP Webinar Series on Zika Virus Syndrome. An archived version of the webinar and PowerPoint slides are available.​

  • The AAP and HealthyChildren.org held the "Dream Vacation or Disaster: Ten Tips for a Great Family Escape" webinar as part of its AAP Webinar Series on Zika Virus Syndrome. An archived version of the webinar is available here​.​

  • The AAP held the "Recognizing Microcephaly and Other Presentations of Zika Virus Syndrome" webinar as part of its AAP Webinar Series on Zika Virus Syndrome. An archived version of the webinar and the PowerPoint slides are available. Answers to questions from the audience are also available.

  • The AAP convened a Children's Hospitals and Preparedness webinar, "Caring for Children with Congenital Zika Virus: Building Community Support". An archived version of the webinar and the PowerPoint slides are available.

  • The AAP has been awarded funding by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau to conduct Project ECHO® Zika, a telementoring project, in the US territories most affected by the Zika virus.

  • An AAP/CDC "Clinical Evaluation and Management of Infants with Congenital Zika Virus Infection" meeting was held in July 2016. Interim clinical guidance has been developed. Pediatricians are advised to report suspected cases to state health departments and confirmed cases of both pregnant women and children to the CDC's Pregnancy Registry.

  • The AAP has been awarded funding by the CDC that will be used to enhance education of and outreach to pediatricians around the country to care for children who have contracted congenital Zika virus infection. Activities related to Zika prevention and control are conducted in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and Zero to Three.​​
