Sexuality is an important part of a healthy, happy life, and sexual development begins during infancy. Primary care providers have an opportunity during clinical preventive service visits as well as during acute care visits to discuss sexual development with parents early on in the child’s life, as well as to teach adolescents and their families about sexuality to guide them towards healthy decision-making. Issues that can be discussed include sexual maturation, sexual attraction, family or cultural values, communication, safety, personal goals, and informed sexual decision-making. Below are resources for providers, adolescents/young adults, and families that can optimize the promotion of sexual health.
