Title Positive Actions Toward Health (PATH)
AAP Grant ID 1859
Project Year 2011
City & State Roanoke, VA
Program Name CATCH Planning
Topic Overweight & Obesity (LHI)
Program Description
Childhood obesity is a growing problem in the United States and here in Southwest Virginia we have few resources to treat obese children, and those resources that are available may be difficult for children and their families to access. The PATH Program (Positive Actions Towards Health) is a pilot treatment program for obese children, providing diet and exercise education with close follow up as noted in the 2007 AAP endorsed guidelines. We envision PATH serving as a community resource for education and partnerships focused on childhood obesity prevention. PATH will plan for our pilot expansion by engaging families in focus groups to determine the barriers that exist to healthy nutrition and activity for their children; coalition development in our community (Child care centers, WIC and Food Stamp Programs, Head Start, Roanoke City Schools, Nurse Home Visiting, and local government); and promotion of PATH for community education about childhood obesity prevention and intervention.
