AAP Grant ID 2001
Project Year 2012
City & State Irvine, CA
Program Name CATCH Planning
Topic Access/Barriers to Health Care (LHI)
Program Description
The Orange County Great Park, America’s first metropolitan park of the 21st Century, is centrally located at the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, and is dedicated to individual, local and global health ( This CATCH Planning Grant will lead to a comprehensive phased-in implementation plan for the Great Park Health and Wellness Clinic, using shared Park space where free recreational, sports, and health and fitness opportunities are already provided. The Clinic is designed to: 1) assist families to gain access to health insurance, and connect children to a medical and dental home; 2) provide direct health screening services and immunizations for those in need who do not have a medical home or pediatrician; 3) increase access to community-based resources, health education, and referrals; 4) cross refer between Clinic providers and pediatricians; and, 5) create a network of health professionals, community-based organizations, local businesses, and educational institutions to provide services in Orange County. An exploratory feasibility study will be conducted which will include surveys of Park visitors – and potential Park visitors – to determine if they will avail themselves of the services provided by the Clinic and what other services are needed. The Clinic can be on the ground and functioning at the early stages of investment and participation. The Clinic in the Park provides a unique venue to deliver traditional medical screening and health education, and to also partner with some of the Great Park's programs to provide new approaches to child health and wellness.
Create the plan for the Great Park Health and Wellness Clinic with a phased roll-out of services, site specifics, participating agencies, Advisory Committee of stakeholders, fiscal structure, and budget
