Title LATCH Now
AAP Grant ID 1881
Project Year 2011
City & State Los Angeles, CA
Program Name CATCH Resident
Topic Breastfeeding
Program Description
Los Angeles County and the communities served by Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) have some of the lowest exclusive breastfeeding rates in the country. This led 4 CHLA residents to start LATCH NOW (Lactation, Advocacy, and Teaching at CHLA, Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, and Network of WICs). LATCH NOW works to improve breastfeeding rates by creating a multi-organizational local breastfeeding coalition, collaborating with our neighborhood birthing center, Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center (HPMC), to attain Baby-Friendly status, establishing community-based perinatal classes for expecting and new parents, and developing breastfeeding advocacy training for medical staff so that they may better support the community. Objectives include: reaching out to new and expecting parents and local family medicine, obstetric, and pediatric clinics through LATCH NOW coalition partners, enrolling parents and newborns in medical homes and educating parents on parenting, nutrition, and breastfeeding using the California Perinatal Services Program (CPSP) model.
Goals
1. Improve the attitudes, knowledge, and practices regarding breastfeeding of local community members.
2. Improve the attitudes, knowledge, and practices regarding breastfeeding of staff, particularly nurses, at CHLA, HPMC, and community practices/clinics.
3. Increase the number of local community members who have medical homes.
