Program Description

Many couples in the San Francisco Bay Area are building their families. Yet, for Asian immigrant families, concerns about language barriers, cultural barriers and financial barriers add much distress to a time that is already full of the anxiety and wonder of childbirth. Our target population is comprised of low-income, underserved, pregnant Asian immigrants in San Mateo County and their subsequent newborns. These newborns will be citizens of the United States by virtue of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. Thus, the name of our program is First Citizens: A Medical Home for Asian Immigrant Newborns. Our program will help this community understand the need to prepare a medical home for a baby before birth, to identify their medical home to the birth hospital before the baby is delivered, and to access medical home services for newborns and their families in language specific, culturally sensitive modern medical offices. Our outcome goals are to impact 750 target families (30% of the population) with our materials and classes, increase the number of newborns who identify a primary care pediatrician and medical home at birth by 200%, and provide a medical haven for 200 of these babies at Daly City Health Services.
