Title While You Wait: Nutrition Promotion Video
AAP Grant ID 1920
Project Year 2011
City & State Los Angeles, CA
Program Name CATCH Resident
Topic Overweight & Obesity (LHI)
Program Description
In a low-income, mostly Latino community of Los Angeles, 50% of the children at a local free clinic are overweight or obese. Based on the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change (TTM), the While You Wait: Nutrition Promotion Video targets families with -2 to 10-year-olds in the preparation and action stages with high motivation. In close partnership with Venice Family Clinic (VFC) and Venice Arts, a non-profit that matches local low-income youths with professional filmmaker mentors, the pilot video will be developed by and for the community. The video includes two themes: 1) short-term behavior change by overcoming barriers to improved nutrition and exercise, and 2) long-term lifestyle change by screening for a medical home and insurance access and linking families to resources. Emphasis will be placed on practical steps to overcome healthcare access barriers and barriers that threaten relapse. The video will be shown in the clinic waiting room, which all patients enter, but will be expanded to the community at large subsequently. Its family-centered, image-based, and dialogue-free scenes reduce barriers of language and literacy. Evaluation will assess viewers pre- and post-test stages of change, knowledge of health eating/exercise techniques and medical home/insurance resources, self-efficacy, attitudes, and emotional arousal.
1. Design, create, and implement a culturally-appropriate, family-centered, image-based waiting room video for families to give tools to address barriers to a) making healthy behavior changes and b) accessing insurance and establishing a medical home. 2. Promote healthy nutrition- and activity-related behavior change families with children 2-10 years old in preparation and action stages of change. 3. Increase access to medical homes and insurance in order to link patients with resources to create lasting lifestyle change by expanding the project to other key sites in the community at large including medical and non-medical settings.
