Title Wellness Policy In Schools
AAP Grant ID 1921
Project Year 2011
City & State New Orleans, LA
Program Name CATCH Implementation
Topic Overweight & Obesity (LHI)
Program Description
Our goal is to support a predominantly African-American school, located in a medically and socially underserved neighborhood, to implement a Wellness Policy that includes routinely, yearly obesity screening and health education. The Wellness Policy will also include guidelines for a healthy food and exercise environment in the school. The identified obese children will be linked to a weight management program on our mobile unit that serves this community. Our mobile clinic was awarded recognition as a medical home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. This school-based intervention is a new initiative of our program, but we have been working with this school since 2006. This project will build on planning activities performed last year, with the generous support of a 2010 CATCH Planning Funds program grant. This obesity prevention initiative will lead to a healthier community by empowering the school to raise awareness of childhood obesity, identifying obese children early, and linking them to a pediatric medical home on our mobile clinic.
1. Screen all Dr Martin Luther King Jr Charter School students for obesity, using body mass index, as part of the school's Wellness Policy.
2. Link all obese patients to aclinic for care.
3. Provide obesity health education classes and workshops in school
