Program Description
|
The Plaquemines Parish Obesity Prevention Program aims to prevent and treat obesity in the children of Plaquemines Parish by educating mothers about healthy eating, with a focus on breastfeeding as an early prevention method. We would utilize our grant to learn more about the current views on healthy eating and breastfeeding held by low-income women in Plaquemines Parish, as well as the barriers or perceived barriers to those practices. What we learn through our research would serve to allow us to eventually develop an educational program as well as to connect women with additional health resources. We plan to target mothers who attend the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) clinics in Plaquemines Parish. As a resource for low-income women that provides free formula and other types of food to mothers and their children, WIC is an ideal place for us to discuss nutrition and breastfeeding with mothers of young children.
