About the Toolkit

About the Books Build Connections Tookit

Parents, grandparents, child care providers, and children talk about important matters in the doctor's office that are essential to a child's development including vaccines, sleep issues, speech development, and so many other topics. As a pediatric professional, you are often the health care provider with whom parents establish a relationship that is consistent and valued.

This toolkit provides useful resources to form positive attitudes about and develop good practices for sharing books and receptive and expressive language development by introducing a variety of strategies and tools to support your patients' early development, strong parent–child relationships, and future school success.

This updated toolkit builds on the work of many individuals. AAP wants to thank the authors of the original literacy toolkit material and the following individuals who contributed to the most recent updates:

  • Pamela C High, MD, FAAP
  • Diane Der Marderosian, MD, FAAP
  • Natalie Golova, MD, FAAP
  • Perri Klass, MD, FAAP
  • Jacquelyn Miller, MLS
  • Members of the AAP Council on Early Childhood
  • AAP Staff: Charlotte Zia

This updated toolkit would not be possible without the generous support of the Too Small to Fail initiative—a joint initiative of Next Generation and theBill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation—and the parent initiative of Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing, with additional contributions from Reach Out and Read.
