Open Position: Senior Vice President, Primary Care & Subspecialty Pediatrics

Summary:

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is an organization of 67,000 pediatricians committed to the optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.

The SVP, Primary Care and Subspecialty Pediatrics will provide strategic guidance and leadership to advance AAP initiatives related to pediatric practice, subspecialty pediatrics, physician payment, macro system structure of child health financing, and health policy specific to children’s health insurance status and the changing structure of practice-based operations.

Responsibilities:

• Provide support to members to enhance practices for managing the health of populations of patients and expand the practice team to include families and a broader range of professional and services; to successfully participate in and thrive in emerging value- based payment systems and to leverage technology, beyond EHRs, in providing quality care, empowering families and demonstrating value.
• Monitor trends in the delivery and financing of pediatric care, structural shifts in the design of health organizations and identify innovative and crosscutting opportunities in the area of program development and policy development and dissemination related to children’s health care finance and delivery.
• Collaborate with leadership to implement initiatives related to children’s health insurance status, the structure and financing of pediatric practices, and coverage trends in the private and public health care markets.
• Develop models of engaging pediatric specialists in policy, educational, advocacy and related activities.
• Provide guidance to constituent committees, councils, sections, and task forces in the development and management of policy and their strategic priorities.
• Expand the AAP federal and foundation grant development capabilities where applicable to advance and expand AAP initiatives.
• Support CPHO, CEO/EVP, and the Executive Committee in advancing the development and implementation of AAP policies.
• Consult with and advise AAP members and other health care organizations and agencies on child health care, quality initiatives, child health financing and delivery systems, and AAP policy on specific issues of child health care.
• Liaise with professional organizations, allied health organizations, government agencies and private agencies as needed to advance the AAP mission, particularly for assigned areas of oversight. Represent the AAP at meetings as needed.
• Oversee department staff and operations, including budget development and management. Lead and mentor assigned staff and encourage a work environment that embraces inclusiveness. Ensure staff operate in a fiscally prudent manner, maintain confidentiality, operate with the highest ethical standards, and provide excellent service to members and volunteers.

Required Qualifications:

• MD, FAAP
• At least ten years’ experience in practice in pediatrics and current with advancements in pediatrics and the health care needs of children and young adults
• At least 5 years’ experience in a leadership capacity on child health care policy, planning and/or public policy, and administration
• Experience with grant development and management and/or contract administration, grant fundraising implementation, and peer-reviewed publications
• Broad understanding of the U.S. health care system, pediatric practice issues, and contemporary child health issues
• In-depth understanding of the general and technical aspects of pediatrics and a strong working knowledge of the AAP
• Excellent consensus building, budget management, interpersonal, decision-making, public speaking, and verbal/written communication skills
• Strategic and innovative thinker with the ability to solve problems and execute initiatives; synthesize data and transfer into actionable outcomes; and serve as an effective liaison between or among various groups, including the ability to engage in successful negotiation, collaboration, and conflict resolution
• Skilled in leadership and developing staff, as well as promoting and maintaining a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment, with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
• Able to effectively prioritize a heavy workload and work well under pressure
• Strong technical acumen and the ability to learn and integrate new and emerging technologies to simplify and improve business practices
• Excellent analytical skills and expertise in public policy
• Positive outlook, high personal standard of excellence and ethics, and ability to build trust and interact with all organizational levels
• Weekend work and travel, and the ability to respond quickly to urgent issues outside core business hours

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with health services research
• Experience working with Board of Directors
• Experience within an organization with at least a $60-million-dollar budget and 350+ employees
• MPH or MBA
