On eve of American Academy of Pediatrics 2017 national conference, attendees will volunteer at a Chicago community park.

CHICAGO—Pediatricians arriving in Chicago for a national conference in September will first spend some time sprucing up Jackson Park on Chicago's lakefront.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has organized a volunteer event for members planning to attend the 2017 National Conference & Exhibition taking place at McCormick Place West, Sept. 16-19. At noon on Friday, Sept. 15, more than 50 pediatricians have registered to join the Chicago Parks Foundation to perform park cleanup at Jackson Park, 6401 S Stony Island Ave.

They'll perform a variety of tasks to keep park grounds well-maintained to ensure that families can continue enjoy the parks and benefits of outdoor play. Among the projects, volunteers will pull weeds from flower beds, paint playground equipment and structures and general clean up the grounds of the park.

The volunteer event was organized as the AAP's eight annual "Community Cares" project, which takes place during the academy's national conference to give members a hands-on opportunity to tackle issues affecting children's health and well-being. Pediatricians attending the National Conference enjoy the opportunity to contribute to the city hosting the conference and connect with the people who live there.

For more information about this event or other news at the AAP national conference, contact the AAP Department of Public Affairs at 847-434-7877, or at commun@aap.org.
