American Academy of Pediatrics 2018 National Conference & Exhibition News Briefing Schedule:

Highlighted Abstract Author Media Availability:
Saturday, Nov. 3, 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. EST

Journalists are invited to meet and interview highlighted abstract authors in the AAP conference press office (room W208AB) at the Orange County Convention Center. Lunch will be provided.

Soundbite Session:
Abstract authors who will give brief presentations about their research:

  • 12:35 - David Liu ("Bed and Sofa-Related Injuries to Young Children Treated in US Emergency Departments, 2007-2016"), whose team found that soft furniture doesn't cushion the risk of falls by young children.
  • 12:40 - Ruth Milanaik, DO, FAAP ("Diversion of Prescription Antibiotics: Should You Take from Peter to Treat Paul?"), whose study found an "alarming" percentage of families who share leftover antibiotics.
  • 12:45 - John Muller ("Violence Depicted in Superhero-Based Films Stratified by Protagonist/Antagonist and Gender"), will share findings that protagonists in this popular film genre were more violent than the villains.
  • 12:50 - Kiesha Fraser-Doh, MD, FAAP ("A Comparison of Parental Firearm Storage Patterns and Children's Access to Firearms"), who found most children surveyed couldn't tell real guns from toy guns in side-by-side photos.
  • 12:55 - Andrew Adesman, MD, FAAP (“Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Are They Up to the Job?”) As the opioid crisis increased the number of grandparents raising their grandchildren, this research suggests these caregivers are overcoming unique challenges.

Meet & Greet: Additional authors who will available for onsite interviews include:

Saira Ahmed, MD; Courtney Allen, DO, FAAP; Joshua Bram; Jane Chung, MD, FAAP; Christian McEvoy, MD, MPH; Natasha Gill, MD, FAAP; Peter Nguyen, MD; Jordan Taylor, MD; Shilpa Patel, MD, MPH, and Julie Young, MA.

News Conference on Effective Discipline:
Monday, Nov. 5, 9:30 a.m. EST

Robert Sege, MD, PhD, FAAP, and Jennifer Shu, MD, FAAP, will discuss discipline strategies work with kids - and those that don't, according to a newly updated policy statement being released by AAP.

News Conference on Armed Conflict and Children:
Monday, Nov. 5., 11 a.m. EST

Jeffrey Goldhagen, MD, MPH, FAAP, will announce the academy's first policy statement on the effects of armed conflict on children. It highlights the physical and psychological toll that armed conflict takes on children, and how, worldwide, the number of child fatalities are underreported. In addition, Julie Linton, MD, FAAP, will address the latest news at the U.S. border, where children continue to be detained after fleeing violence in central America.
