Hilary Haftel, MD, MHPE, FAAP has been hired by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to lead its educational initiatives.

Dr. Haftel comes to the AAP from the University of Michigan Medical Center where she held several leadership roles, including appointments as Professor of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Health Learning Sciences; Associate Chair and Director of Education in the Department of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases; Director of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology; and also leads the Adolescent and Young Adult Rheumatology Program.

Dr. Haftel is recognized nationally for her work in undergraduate and graduate medical education. She serves as a Council Member of the Association for Pediatric Program Directors (APPD) Leadership in Educational Academic Development (LEAD) program, is a member of the AAPD’s Longitudinal Education Assessment Research Network (LEARN) Advisory Council and a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine Rheumatology Board Exam Committee.

Dr. Haftel is board certified in Pediatrics, Rheumatology and Pediatric Rheumatology. She received a B.S. in biology and music from Union College in Schenectady, NY and a medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY, where she also completed residency training in combined medicine-pediatrics and a chief residency before coming to the University of Michigan for fellowship training in adult and pediatric rheumatology. Dr. Haftel received an MHPE from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

As SVP of Education, Dr. Haftel will be responsible for advancing the AAP’s broad-based educational activities, including E-Learning, graduate medical education (GME), and continuing medical education (CME).
