During this moderated conversation, pediatricians will learn more about Justice Sotomayor, the first Latina to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
NEW ORLEANS, La.—U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, author of a new children’s book about celebrating the differences that make each of us unique, will draw on the childhood memories that influenced her writing during the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) 2019 National Conference & Exhibition.
In her book, “Just Ask! Be Different, Be Brave, Be You,” Sotomayor encourages readers to “just ask” when they encounter someone different from themselves. She will talk about her book during a moderated conversation from 11:50 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Great Hall.
In “Just Ask!,” kids work together to build a community garden, asking questions of each other along the way. The book encourages everyone to do the same, urging readers who come across someone who is different, to “just ask.”
Sonia Sotomayor was born in the Bronx, New York. She earned a BA from Princeton University and a JD from Yale Law School. She served as Assistant District Attorney in New York County, and then as a litigator at Pavia & Harcourt. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush nominated her to the US District Court, Southern District of New York. In 1997, President William Jefferson Clinton nominated her to the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. President Barack Obama nominated her as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on May 26, 2009, and she assumed this role August 8, 2009, becoming the first Latina Justice on the Court. She is the author of My Beloved World, Turning Pages, and The Beloved World of Sonia Sotomayor.
A book signing follows the conversation in the Exhibit Hall. Interview requests must be made in advance of the conference by contacting Shanta Newlin at snewlin@penguinrandomhouse.com.
