ITASCA, IL – Nivedita Mohanty, MD, MS, FAAP has been hired by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) as part of its senior leadership team to provide strategic guidance for population health initiatives to advance pediatric practice in alignment with AAP leadership and equity priorities.

As Senior Vice President of Child Health Finance and Quality, Dr. Mohanty will lead initiatives related to pediatric health care financing, physician payment,  practice transformation, quality improvement (QI), and health information technology (HIT), including the AAP CHILD Health Registry, elements of Maintenance of Certification activities, data analytics and measurement, clinical guidelines, and health policy specific to children’s health insurance status and the changing structure of practice-based operations. She begins her work at AAP in August.

“We are fortunate to welcome Dr. Mohanty to our leadership team to help us advance critical initiatives in pediatric health care quality and financing, including the AAP CHILD Health registry,” said Mark Del Monte, JD, CEO/Executive Vice President of the AAP. “This work carries significant goals in tracking and improving the trajectory of children’s health and well-being, from birth into adulthood. Dr. Mohanty brings significant experience in clinical care, health care quality and patient safety, health information technology and research that will be critical to the Academy’s success in these initiatives.”

“In this role, Dr. Mohanty will provide strategic guidance for work that will materially improve the health and well-being of thousands of infants, children and adolescents,” said Anne Edwards, MD, FAAP, Chief Medical Officer of the AAP. “Using data and benchmarks, our goals are to substantially accelerate advances in child health and assist pediatricians in their ability to deliver improved care. Dr. Mohanty’s background as a practicing pediatrician with experience in large quality improvement initiatives brings valuable insight and skills to this work.”

Dr. Mohanty comes to the AAP from AllianceChicago, a support organization to a national network of Federally Qualified Health Centers across 19 states, where she served as Chief Research and Innovation Officer and most recently as Chief Health Impact Officer. In these roles she has led a portfolio of quality, innovation, and research initiatives with a focus on improving outcomes for patients and the workforce. These initiatives leverage private and public partnerships to advance evidence-based care, health equity, and chronic disease prevention, and have been supported by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and private foundations. Dr. Mohanty’s work has received honors from Crain’s Chicago Business, the National Association of Community Health Centers, and HRSA. Dr. Mohanty is a Clinical Associate Professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and has clinical responsibilities at Erie Family Health Centers and Ann and Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. She is a volunteer pediatrician for global organizations with whom she has served families in 11 countries alongside international medical teams.

Dr. Mohanty received a B.A. in biology and world religions from Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga., and her medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Ga. She completed her residency in pediatrics from the University of Chicago and received an MS in healthcare quality patient safety from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. She was an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) fellow in Washington, DC, with a focus on advancing national health priorities.

"It is such an honor to serve the mission of the AAP.  Both as a practicing pediatrician and in my work across health systems, I constantly adjust my focus to serve the needs of individual patients and families and contribute to measurable improvements across the broader systems that care for them. With the many current issues impacting children, families, and the workforce, I am very excited to contribute to the mission of an organization with such dedication to their well-being and high-quality care," said Dr. Mohanty.
