In recognition of American Heart Month and Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) Awareness Week, the American Academy of Pediatrics will host a multidisciplinary panel event. This live, interactive forum will give pediatricians, obstetrician-gynecologists, internal medicine physicians, and emergency medicine physicians an opportunity to engage with each other to build knowledge, skills, and competence related to care coordination for people with CHDs. The event’s focus is to help ensure that people with CHDs get the specialized care they need to stay healthy across the lifespan.
Learning Objectives
- Identify opportunities to reduce gaps in care for individuals living with a congenital heart defect.
- Identify and promote a team-based approach for collaborative and continuous lifelong cardiac care for patients with a congenital heart defect.
- Understand intervention and prevention strategies, including utilizing patient touchpoints to promote referrals for congenital cardiac care.

Thomas Glenn, MD
Moderator
Dr Thomas M. Glenn is a pediatric cardiology fellow in San Diego, California. He received his medical degree from St George's University School of Medicine and then completed his pediatrics residency training at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. On a personal level, Dr Glenn is living with congenital heart disease and has survived several open-heart surgeries. He is currently a PGY-6 pediatric cardiology fellow at UC San Diego – Rady Children’s Hospital, dedicating his life to taking care of and managing pediatric patients with both congenital and acquired heart disease, all while inspiring them to live their lives to the fullest. He serves on the Executive Leadership Team of the Fontan Outcomes Network, a learning network designed to improve outcomes and quality of life for individuals living with Single Ventricle heart disease. He will be completing his fellowship training next year, with a one-year training program in Advanced Single Ventricle Care at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Annette Ansong, MD, FAAP
Dr Annette Ansong is a pediatric cardiologist and the medical director of outpatient cardiology at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. Dr Ansong is the proud daughter of immigrants from Ghana and was born, raised, and has worked in the Washington, DC, area. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia, followed by medical school at Howard University College of Medicine. She completed her Pediatrics residency and Pediatric Cardiology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. She is involved regionally and nationally on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Dr Ansong currently co-chairs the Women and Children Committee of the Association of Black Cardiologists, Inc., and serves on the Adult Congenital & Pediatric Cardiology Leadership Council of the American College of Cardiology. She is a member of several AAP Sections and Councils, including the Council on Communications and Media, Section on Administration & Practice Management, Section on Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, and Section on Minority Health, Equity, and Inclusion. She is also a member of the Virginia Chapter, AAP.
Christian Chisholm, MD, FACOG
Dr Christian Chisholm is a professor of Ob/Gyn and Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He currently serves as the medical director for inpatient obstetrics and for the fetal care center, as well as the department vice-chair for medical education. Dr Chisholm is also currently the co-chair of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ (ACOG) District IV Committee on Perinatal Mortality. He serves as co-lead for the Alliance for Innovation in Maternal Health (AIM) for Virginia and helped lead implementation of the AIM Obstetric Hemorrhage Patient Safety Bundle. Dr Chisholm is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and his clinical interests include the full spectrum of maternal-fetal medicine with specific expertise in chorionic villus sampling (CVS), cervical cerclage, fetal blood sampling and transfusion, operative vaginal delivery and delivery of multiple gestations. Dr Chisholm has authored several articles, including the article titled Concordance Between Obstetric Anatomic Ultrasound and Fetal Echocardiography in Detecting Congenital Heart Disease in High-risk Pregnancies.
Mark X. Cicero, MD, FAAP
Dr Cicero is an associate professor in the section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) at the Yale School of Medicine. Prior to this appointment, he completed medical school at State University of New York at Buffalo, pediatrics residency and chief residency at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, and PEM fellowship at Yale. He has served nationally as a consultant for prehospital and hospital pediatric disaster preparedness. Firsthand disaster experience includes hurricane Isabel in Norfolk VA, as well as an epidemic. He serves as the chair of the pediatrics committee of the National Association of EMS Physicians, and on the National Biodefense Science Board. Dr Cicero is a member of the AAP Section on Emergency Medicine.
Richard Wardrop III, MD, PhD, FAAP, FACP
Dr Richard Wardrop is an Internal Medicine physician and the Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Cleveland Clinic. He completed his PhD and medical degree at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and later continued to his combined medicine and pediatrics residency at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He serves on the internal medicine governance board at the American Board of Internal Medicine. Throughout his career, he has practiced both as an Adult and Pediatric Hospitalist and was recognized by the American College of Physicians (ACP) as one of America's top 10 Hospitalists in 2018. Dr Wardrop has also served in national leadership positions within the ACP, the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
