David J Schonfeld, MD, FAAP, established and directs the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He is Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Keck School of Medicine. For more than 30 years, he has provided consultation and training to schools on supporting students and staff at times of crisis and loss in the aftermath of numerous school crisis events and disasters within the United States and abroad, including the COVID-19 pandemic; terrorist attacks of the World Trade Center; school and community shootings and stabbings in Parkland, FL, Newtown, CT, Las Vegas, NV, and Osaka, Japan; flooding from hurricanes Maria in San Juan, Sandy in NY and NJ, and Katrina in New Orleans; tornadoes in Joplin, MO and AL; wildfires in Maui, HI, Butte County and Sonoma County, CA, and Sevierville, TN; and the 8.0-magnitude earthquake in Sichuan, China. Dr. Schonfeld is a member of the Executive Committee of the AAP Council on Children and Disasters and Chair of the National Advisory Committee on Children and Disasters.

Kristyn Pierce, MPH

Kristyn Pierce, MPH, is a Research Scientist in the Department of Pediatrics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She is a biostatistician and research methodologist. Her work focuses on analytic methods to examine clinical and mental health outcomes in children. Broadly, she is interested in adverse experiences and other contextual factors in childhood and their relationships with anxiety disorders later in life.
