The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Health Scholars have co-developed virtual reality (VR) training applications to equip first responders with skills vital to assessing and treating pediatric medical emergencies.

Recognizing severe illness in infants and children is challenging, and it’s further compounded by limited exposure to pediatric emergencies. Unless providers are practicing frequently, the nuanced critical skill sets needed to effectively treat infants and children decline over time, leading to significant readiness challenges.

The pediatric virtual reality applications use artificial intelligence (AI-enabled) voice technology to replicate real-world interaction and to create highly sophisticated, self-directed learning experiences that adapt to the providers’ proficiency level to optimize learning gains. The technology captures rich information about individual learner competencies to determine readiness for facing pediatric emergency situations. Organizational leaders and administrators can manage learners, assign content, allow for learners to self-schedule and access detailed readiness assessment data for individuals, teams or at the organization level.

Pediatric Emergency AssessmentTM

Less than 10% of all emergency medical services (EMS) calls are pediatric emergencies, making it one of the most frightening calls an EMS provider may receive.

Recognizing severe illness in infants and children is a high-stakes, nuanced art and First Responders have to determine whether or not a child is severely ill and initiate life-saving care. Maintaining this level of skill requires frequent performance and deliberate practice of emergency pediatric assessment.

The Pediatric Emergency Assessment™ application will help providers maintain critical pediatric assessment and stabilization skills, and will decrease the potential for skills decay.

How It Works

With true-to-life assessment and stabilization scenarios, Pediatric Emergency Assessment™ hones competencies without in-person training or expensive mannikins. Learners are virtually presented with infants and children who present with physical findings of:

  • Stability
  • Compensated & Decompensated Shock
  • Respiratory Distress
  • Respiratory Failure
  • CNS/Metabolic Disorders
  • Cardiopulmonary Failure

They must assess each patient, properly assess the findings, and use voice commands to initiate care.

Pediatric Emergency CareTM

When it comes to severe pediatric illness, common mistakes can be catastrophic. Providers will be able to handle any challenge that requires frequent execution and deliberate practice (as recommended by the American Heart Association) of pediatric resuscitation. The Pediatric Emergency Care™ application offers advanced resuscitation training scenarios for a comprehensive, scalable, repeatable practice.

How It Works

After having refreshed pediatric emergency assessments, providers will practice the role of team lead and care for acutely ill pediatric patients in multiple home settings. Learners evaluate infants and children to identify underlying conditions and intervene with pediatric resuscitation workflows in accordance with ILCOR Guidelines.

The Pediatric Emergency Care™ VR simulation training contains four in-home VR scenarios focused on critical pediatric assessment and stabilization. This VR training is specifically developed for EMS providers and includes the following assessment and management content:

  • Respiratory distress from asthma and albuterol precipitated stable SVT.
  • CNS/metabolic and cardiopulmonary failure from opiate overdose.
  • Viral myocarditis with hypovolemic shock from diarrhea. CNS/metabolic impairment from hypoglycemia and unstable wide complex tachycardia.
  • Respiratory failure and distributive shock from pneumonia leading to cardiopulmonary arrest.

Features

Voice Controlled

Healthcare providers practice communication skills by using voice commands to control the application and interact with virtual team members. Using artificial intelligence, virtual team members can carry out the commands, making this experience the most immersive, effective VR simulation possible.

Adaptive Learning Technology

Learners receive additional scenario content tailored to their in-app performance.

Realistic Healthcare Scenarios

The virtual scenarios accurately model the nuanced physical findings that general care providers must detect in order to differentiate severe from non-severe illness, so the training feels authentic and urgent.

Actionable Insights

Capture and assesses core competencies to identify skills gaps across your organization.

Detailed In-App Debriefs

Learners receive detailed in-app debriefing on their performance. Scenario-specific training priorities help learners hone their skills, understand their strengths, and identify opportunities to improve.

CAPCE Accredited

Pediatric Emergency Assessment™ provides .5 CAPCE-approved continuing education hours per quarter, for up to 2 hours over the course of a year.

Compatible with Major VR Hardware

The application works on Oculus Quest 2 headsets.
