Lead Researcher:
Stephanie Stepp, PhD (University of Pittsburgh)

What is the goal of this study?

  • This study will collect preliminary feasibility and effectiveness data on a digital suicide prevention intervention that can be delivered in pediatric primary care settings without on-site behavioral health support.

Summary of Study Design:

  • The study will consist of three iterative aims:
    • Aim 1: Focus groups with clinicians, adolescents, and parents to gather feedback about the intervention (i.e., how might it be implemented, will it meet end-users needs).
    • Aim 2: Conduct a small, pilot trial to test the intervention with a limited number of participants.
    • Aim 3: Qualitative interviews and surveys with Aim 2 participants to further inform the development of the intervention.

Participants:

  • Aim 1: Focus group participants will be:
    • 6-8 clinicians/office staff
    • 6-8 adolescents (12-17) with a history of depression, or suicidal thoughts/behaviors
    • 6-8 parents
  • Aims 2 and 3: Four PROS practices; about 15 adolescents per practice.

Study Duration:

  • June 2023 – April 2026

Funding:

  • NIH; National Institute of Mental Health
