Advocacy Training Grantees

The Advocacy Training Grants support 4 pediatric faculty-resident pairs to attend the annual AAP Legislative Conference. Following the conference, pairs collaborate with their AAP chapters to implement educational activities for trainees on child advocacy.

2020 Grantees

University of Colorado/Colorado Chapter

Faculty & Resident: Hilary Stempel, MD, FAAP and Alexis Ball, MD

Goal: Create a sustainable and longitudinal advocacy curriculum that develops residents’ skills in crafting their voice as pediatrician advocates throughout and after residency

Key components:

  • Implementing curricular components on Stakeholder Analysis, Written Advocacy, Social Media, and Testifying
  • Residents practicing advocacy skills with chapter support 
  • Residents translating skills into experience during the legislative session

Anticipated Outcomes: 

  • Creation of a new longitudinal advocacy curriculum that increases resident confidence and effectiveness in their advocacy skills. 
  • Increased resident engagement with chapter members and legislative efforts. 
  • Increased participation in testifying during the legislative session, interacting with media, and writing op-eds to support chapter priorities.

Internal Medicine-Pediatrics at University of Illinois at Chicago/Illinois Chapter

Faculty & Resident: Michelle Barnes, MD, FAAP and Zoe Haemer, MD

Goal:  Expand advocacy training and engagement of residents in a sustainable longitudinal curriculum 

Key components will include:

  • Building connections with community activists, resources, and stakeholders
  • Providing hands-on advocacy skill building
  • Educating residents through monthly conferences on priority topics 

Anticipated Outcomes: 

  • Increased connections with community stakeholders and advocates
  • Increased engagement in advocacy, including op-ed writing, communicating with elected officials, and participating in letter writing campaigns
  • Disseminated information about legislative issues to connect all Chicagoland residents

Nemours Children’s Hospital/Florida Chapter

Faculty & Resident: Corinne Bria, MD, FAAP and Laura Chilcutt, MD, JD

Goal:  Establish a longitudinal advocacy curriculum providing residents comprehensive experience through legislative training, issue-specific legislative updates, and using the media as a tool for change and education

Key components:

  • Implementing sustainable and holistic legislative advocacy curricula to span residency
  • Collaborating with the FCAAP to develop trainings and coordinate advocacy efforts with local pediatric residency programs
  • Legislative interpretation training with a focus on proposed bills designed to eliminate vaccine exemptions in the state of Florida
  • Monthly State of Medicine updates focusing on legislative news, and a media session covering preparation and use of press releases and op-eds

Anticipated Outcomes:  

  • Residents will develop a solid understanding of how to identify and address issues affecting children and practice of medicine.
  • Residents will be experienced in identifying reliable resources, promoting views and initiatives via the media, and developing new community programs.  
  • Graduates will be equipped to be advocates for patients and the practice of pediatrics.

Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami/Florida Chapter

Faculty & Resident: Michael Maurer, MD, FAAP and Rachel Leeman, MD

Goal:  Build sustainable elements for resident advocacy education and provide structured opportunities for residents to develop advocacy skills so they will be equipped throughout their careers to make meaningful changes in their communities

Key components:

  • Establishing a quarterly Advocacy Workshop Series focused on op-ed writing, utilizing social media, and communicating with legislators
  • Implementing quarterly advocacy grand rounds led by FCAAP leaders about local and statewide advocacy issues
  • Incorporating advocacy work into mandatory rotations that span the three years of residency – ambulatory, pediatric mobile clinic, and school health.

Anticipated Outcomes: 

  • Improved resident satisfaction with advocacy education and improved resident competence with specific advocacy skills
  • Increased number of published op-eds by residents in the 2020-2021 academic year 
  • Increased collaboration with the FCAAP for mentorship and advocacy opportunities

2019 Grantees

Columbia University/New York Chapter 3 

Faculty & Resident: Morgan Finkel, MD, FAAP and Erika McArthur, MD

Goal: To educate residents on the importance of coalition building to magnify their voices and better serve patients, by using public charge and decreased WIC enrollment as a case study.

Key components will include:

  1. Training residents on components of coalition building, including identification of key stakeholders, creation of a shared agenda, and implementation of a strategy to affect change. 
  2. Creation of a longitudinal project focusing on coalition building with monthly debriefings during advocacy noon lectures.
  3. A showcase and panel of coalition partners to discuss work accomplished.

Outcomes: We will embed a new curriculum into the residency community pediatrics block. Residents will be trained in coalition building while at the same time advocating for increased WIC enrollment to address food insecurity in the population served. By the end of the 2nd year of residency, our residents will have had a hands-on experience building and strategizing with a coalition to improve the health of children in our community.

Kansas University School of Medicine/Kansas Chapter  

Faculty & Resident: Dena Hubbard, MD, FAAP and Karishma Rao, MD

Goal: Increase the advocacy activity (quantity and quality) of pediatric residents in Kansas by providing structured, sustainable advocacy education and hands-on opportunities utilizing a current Kansas legislative issue: implementation of the Family First Prevention Services Act.

Key components will include:

  1. Establishment of a “resident key contact list” for legislative updates and specific requests for action.
  2. Training on communication with decision makers provided through quarterly webinars and hands-on practice
  3. Advocacy day opportunity to engage with legislators 

Outcomes: Residents will become more confident and comfortable in their advocacy skills. Communication on advocacy issues will be improved via class advocacy representative. Residents will be empowered to take action in collaboration with KAAP on current child health issues. 

Mercer/Navicent General Pediatric Program/Georgia Chapter 

Faculty & Resident: Katherine Duncan, MD, FAAP and Patricia Tran, MD

Goal: Establish a formal, sustainable residency curriculum that prepares residents to be effective advocates for children when issues arise, by inspiring them to meet the need for pediatric advocacy, building skills for successful advocacy through didactic lectures & hands-on training in a variety of pediatric advocacy issues & reducing barriers to participation through supervised practice.

Key components will include:

  1. A new, formalized longitudinal advocacy curriculum. 
  2. An advocacy workshop series on legislative advocacy and print media, tv media, and social media advocacy. 
  3. Practice with on-camera interviews, setting up professional social media accounts, writing op-eds and blog posts, speaking to legislators, and framing advocacy messages effectively for various audiences.  

Outcomes: We will start an ongoing advocacy curriculum while increasing the visibility of advocacy at our organization. The theme "Getting Started in Advocacy” will help residents develop and apply knowledge and skills in media, community, and legislative advocacy, leading up to Georgia's Primary Care Legislative Day.  

UCLA Pediatrics/California Chapter 2 

Faculty & Resident: Cambria Garell, MD, FAAP and Lisa Gantz, MD

Goal: Expand educational and experiential opportunities in advocacy earlier and more consistently throughout training for residents at all PGY levels while simultaneously introducing residents to immigrant health issues.

Key components will include:

  1. Creation of a resident-run Advocacy Council to host regular meetings and workshops, prepare 5-minute “Advocacy Appetizers” for noon conferences, and organize program-wide advocacy efforts on “Take Action Tuesdays”.
  2. Creation of a longitudinal advocacy curriculum to teach core competencies outlined in the AAP Advocacy Training Modules and introduce immigrant health issues. Community partners and chapter experts will be guest speakers.

Outcomes: We will fill an identified gap in our advocacy training by implementing more longitudinal experiences in advocacy throughout all PGY years. The new Advocacy Council will provide leadership opportunities for residents with interests in advocacy and foster resident-driven advocacy activities. Arming our residents with advocacy skills earlier in residency will allow them to apply those skills more actively while also increasing their capacity to care for immigrant children.
