Title Promoting Breastfeeding in Child Care Centers
AAP Grant ID 1907
Project Year 2011
City & State Baton Rouge, LA
Program Name CATCH Resident
Topic Breastfeeding
Program Description
The goal of this project is to help fight the obesity epidemic by promoting breastfeeding. One of the challenges of continued breastfeeding occurs when the mother and child are separated, as when the mother returns to work and the child enters child care. The first part of the project will focus on the needs assessment. We will survey child care directors, teachers, and parents in multiple child care centers to determine the current breastfeeding rates, attitudes towards breastfeeding and any potential barriers to breastfeeding that may exist. The second part of the project will involve developing educational materials to help overcome barriers that were determined during the needs assessment phase. We will develop an educational power point presentation and handouts to educate staff and parents about breastfeeding and to connect centers and parents with resources that support and promote breastfeeding.
Goals
1. determine the current rate of breastfeeding in children after being placed in child care
2. determine barriers for mothers and child care centers to continue breastfeeding
3. educate child care centers and parents about breastfeeding and how it can be continued as well as connect them with breastfeeding resources and supportive health professionals
