“The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs) are an opportunity to clearly explain to parents what a healthy diet for their children should look like; rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods, and low in added sugars and refined carbohydrates. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recognizes the importance of the DGAs’ clear focus on child nutrition guidance that supports healthy eating patterns for children, with a focus on whole, minimally processed foods.

“Every day, pediatricians support families in developing healthy eating habits, and we commend the DGAs’ inclusion of the Academy’s evidence-based policy related to breastfeeding, introduction of solid foods, caffeine avoidance and limits on added sugars.

“Pediatricians also see the consequences of the current food environment, where access to nutritious food is often unavailable or unaffordable and highly processed foods fill the void. Those consequences are demonstrated in unacceptably high rates of childhood obesity, overweight, diabetes and other health challenges. Our children deserve better.

“Pediatricians are committed to public policies that promote healthy eating and ensure all children have access to affordable and nutritious food. AAP welcomes the partnership of the Trump Administration in this effort and looks forward to continued collaboration."
