Meet the AAP President-Elect Candidates – Ep. 304

Dr. Lois Lee is a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Boston Children’s Hospital and a professor of clinical pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. She is a leader in the AAP with her involvement in her state chapter, on AAP committees, as a lead author for several policy statements, and as immediate past chair of the Council on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention. She has also co-hosted trivia night at the NCE for the last few years! She has published seminal research on pediatric emergency medicine, health equity, and injury prevention, including on firearm injuries. Her expertise has been recognized with her election to the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Lee is passionate about improving the lives of all children and promotes child health through her clinical work, research, teaching, and advocacy.

Dr. Wanda Barfield is a neonatologist at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.  She is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine, a professor of pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University, and a member-elect of the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Barfield directed CDC's Division of Reproductive Health, where she led federal initiatives on maternal and infant health, equity, and emerging threats to perinatal populations.  A Walter Reed-trained army pediatrician and Boston Children's-trained neonatologist, she served in the U.S. Public Health Service, reaching the rank of Rear Admiral/Assistant Surgeon General (retired).  Dr. Barfield has served AAP as the U.S. Public Health Service representative to the Uniformed Services Executive Committee, as the CDC liaison to the AAP Committee on Fetus and Newborn, and the AAP Executive Committee of the Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.  She authored seminal AAP guidance on infant opioid exposure and levels of neonatal care.
