Dr. Tamara Johnson is a pediatrician at a federally qualified health center in Spartanburg, SC. She also holds dual academic appointments as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville and Clinical Faculty at VCOM-Carolinas Campus. Her interests include community health and outreach, especially underserved populations, and mentoring minority students.
Dr. Johnson is a native of Greenville, SC. She completed her undergraduate studies at Duke University, where she received her BA in Psychology and double minored in Dance and Women’s Studies. Upon graduation, she moved to Philadelphia, PA to attend the University of Pennsylvania’s Special Science Post Baccalaureate Program. While there, she also worked as a research coordinator for the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Autism. Dr. Johnson returned to South Carolina, where she received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and completed her residency and chief residency at Greenville Health System (now Prisma Health). In 2019, she completed the Primary Care Training and Enhancement Fellowship through a collaborative effort with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and Edward Via College of Medicine (VCOM)-Carolinas Campus, which ignited her interest in the social determinants of health.
In addition to serving her community, Dr. Johnson is a professional dancer with Vaughn Newman Dance Company. Dance has been a lifelong passion and, despite a break to pursue her medical education, she is grateful for the opportunity to combine her two great loves.
