Description and Learning Objectives
May-June 2026
Essential Newborn Care 2 (ENC 2) is one of the new modules of the World Health Organization (WHO) Essential Newborn Care Course, developed by WHO in collaboration with AAP. ENC 2 is an evidence-based, hands-on educational program focusing on the care of babies from 60 minutes after birth to discharge from the facility. ENC 2 incorporates the content in earlier programs by AAP, Essential Care for Every Baby (ECEB) and Essential Care for Small Babies (ECSB), updated to align with WHO recommendations and guidelines.
This online ENC 2 facilitator training course will take place over four, live sessions and provide participants with the skills necessary to train others in neonatal assessment and continuing care.
After this course, learners should be able to:
- Identify key messages of ENC 2
- Successfully carry out all of the core ENC 2 skills (identification of risk factors, classification, routine care, immediate care, reassessment and preparation for discharge, and advanced care)
- Successfully complete the ENC 2 Knowledge Check and Case Scenarios
- Demonstrate presentation of ENC 2 content and facilitate small group learning with participants of varying ability levels
- Access online resources to plan and evaluate courses
